Chronic schizophrenia

I got to talk to a sick lady today as an official part of my job duties. I was walking around testing new keys and there was a lady talking loudly to herself on one of our quiet floors. After a couple of outbursts, I put on my calming voice and politely reminded her that she was in a quiet area.
Well, she didn’t like that and responded by talking about how she didn’t commit the felony and she wan’t going to press charges. Darnit–having a conversation with a schizophrenic person was not on my calendar today.
We had a little back and forth, but the voices wouldn’t let me talk to the sane person hiding deep inside the woman in front of me. About 80% of the time, I can find that person and convince her to take the voices to a different floor or outside (where one can use your outside voice with impunity). So I got to make my first police call at UC Surf Board today. Typically I try to avoid this, as people like this don’t usually react well to uniforms. But today, the two brawny gentlemen who responded to the call “came to an agreement” with the lady.
They were pretty awesome.
