Ping so far.

What we know thus far:

  • Pinging / TrackBack is another way to reference a post in a blog.
  • You have to enable it in MT, and I'm not sure if other brands-o-blogs support it.
  • I know that blogger doesn't
  • I'm starting to think you can only do this with MT AND ping enabled blogs.

It is possible that TrackBack is a plot by MovableType to suck up the spare time of people that are too lazy to write their own extensions to free software.

But a lot of people are trying it. Interestingly, googling for 'blog ping' brings in many test-posts to blogs. I'll ping one here that has a very nice parenthetical quip about California:

...without realizing that custom maps sent to me attached to email was at the time caught in the limbo of my bulk-mail folder spamfilter also provided by Yahoo in this case to my Enronesque service-provider, SBC (in the former Mexican parts of the US, the Texas utilities keep making california utilities their bitch).

Perhaps the last word on Pinging will go to Jeremy Sawadny, who describes a ping-doomsday scenario.

Ping received, loud and clear. Now I just need to capitalize the 'c' in California...
